WhatsApp Vs signal, price of privacy
We are witnessing how much everyone of us value privacy. It’s evidently seen in recent days.If
WhatsApp and
Signal are compared, and analysed the question of privacy is at risk in one of it and the other came up guaranteeing privacy, The Slant community recommends
Signal for most of the people.
When it comes to ranking regarding the question
“What is the best team chat software?” for which
Signal is ranked 2nd while
WhatsApp is ranked 40th. Why does this happen? What made people switch to signal so suddenly? The important reason why people chose Signal would be:
All the Messages sent through Signal are said to be encrypted, which means that the platform cannot access private messages or media, or store them on their server, thus ensuring the privacy of the user.
It’s also noted that WhatsApp also provides end-to-end encryption for messages, it can only access other private information like IP address, group details and status. In conjunction to that WhatsApp company also does not encrypt messages stored on the cloud. Even other companies of Telegram, which is another rival messaging app, is said to store user’s contact number and all.
Nevertheless, if the devices are offline, Signal will store certain messages on its server until messages are delivered for the person they message is sent to.
Other advantages of Signal are it also allows setting a registration lock PIN, which helps users protect private profile information. In addition to this the same number can also be used to retrieve profile, settings, contacts if a user loses the device or switches to a new one.
Another benefit is that Signal isn’t owned by a big technology firm, unlike WhatsApp.
The app Signal Messenger was founded by Moxie Marlinspike and Brian Acton in the year 2018. Clearly, Acton is also the co-founder of WhatsApp. He left another famous app Facebook, he owned the company three years after the social network bought it for $19 billion.
Signal Foundation’s main objective is to provide its users an encrypted messaging app. The application is basically an open source, and also WhatsApp currently uses Signal’s end-to-end encryption protocol.
Recently, Facebook-owned WhatsApp which also updated its privacy policy, that prompted several users to search for other alternative platforms. That search finally led them to few available rival messaging apps. Top among them in the chart is Signal, which is a California-based app, run by a not-for-profit organisation.
Another impetus towards the sudden popularity of signal is that, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted encouraging the users to switch to Signal ,he tweeted “use signal”.And this statement has given the privacy-focussed app an extra lift. Also it's an advanced end to end encryption protocol that provides privacy for every message every time.
What about user privacy? Why does everyone value privacy this much? What’s it's importance?
The user’s phone number is the only data Signal which seems to be stored, which is contrary to WhatsApp.
In conjunction with e privacy guaranteed by encrypting messages, Signal service hides another important piece of metadata –which adds to it's privacy assurance ,of who is messaging whom. Through the ‘sealed sender’ feature, the app most importantly hides the details of the sender and recipient.
Signal also allows the user to relay on the voice calls to its servers, thereby screening the user’s identity from contacts. Plus, Users can also enable incognito keyboard mode and block screenshots within the app. Recently, the app added another fascinating feature to blur faces automatically before sending pictures.
Signal confirms that it can also determine whether contacts in a user’s address book are Signal users without revealing contacts in their address book to the service.
How can this get commenced? Signal is available primarily in both Android and iOS devices. In anticipation of it the Users can access the app on the desktop. One can get started by registering their phone number and easily join the messaging platform and setting up the registration PIN for additional security.
So it can be summed up by defining Signal as a privacy focused WhatsApp alternative, which is gaining momentum in the wake of the outrage around WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy. Signal has emerged all of a sudden as one of the top alternatives to WhatsApp recently, with WhatsApp's updated privacy policy causing an outrage and virtual protest on the Internet. Many people have finally decided to opt signal and declared their intention to delete WhatsApp and switch to Signal. Privacy has a great value in every human's life, their dealings, sharing of feelings, and everything . This sudden change shook most of us as it was not acceptable. So we now have a choice either to remain or to switch to other privacy focused apps.
But before that WhatsApp has made it clear that they respect everybody's privacy as it says that this Policy change won’t affect the privacy of your messages with friends and family in any way .
Privacy is given great importance because it is the ability to control who can access information about our private life and our activities.
